Microsoft Security Essentials Beta Released

Microsoft today released their new security application, formerly named Morro. Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) is now in beta, and is available for the first 75,000 people that download it. It is available at Microsoft Connect, you must have a Live ID to access and download. The website for MSE, gives an overview of the suite, and a link to download from Connect. I have already downloaded both XP, and Vista for myself. So hurry up and get your copy!

Nothing much. This is a fresh install, and running UxStyle Core. I might use a dock eventually, or when I can narrow my most used programs to less than 10 and find matching icons.

Finals are over! Summer’s here!

Finally, school is now over! I finished my last set of final exams today. Math was… near impossible. I wish I knew my grades for them, but I’m sure I had B’s and higher for all of the exams, except math. Oh well, no more stress, and I can finally have more time to learn what I want.

UxStyle Core Beta Available

Rafael, from Within Windows, has released the beta bits for UxStyle. UxStyle is the new way of running third-party visual styles for Microsoft Windows. UxStyle runs in the background, and instead of patching the files, UxStyle uses a method that lets themes “just work” with no patching needed. Sound interesting? Download it, and try it for yourself.

You can read more about UxStyle at Within Windows.

Yes, I can give my approval on using UxStyle. I am using it right now. I installed, downloaded the Alduin Visual Style, and applied the theme. Easy as that! Great work Rafael!

Let us, and Rafael’s team know, if you get any problems.

Update: Restarting or turning off the computer, stops the service, and there is no way to start the service again unless “Unsigned Themes” service listed in “services.msc” or “UnsignedThemesSvc.exe” is found in the Windows directory (C:\Windows).

Update 2: The only fix I know for this right now, is to uninstall the beta then reinstall it. Rafael is looking into this problem.

Firefox 3.5 RC2 Released

Mozilla’s newest release of Firefox’s pre-release builds was released. It is considered stable, but it is suggested that you should only use it if you are a developer or a tester. I say it’s fine to use if you know about pre-release software. The downside of this Release Candidate is that, like new releases of Firefox, most add-ons do not work.

Some new features in RC2:

  • Private Browsing (finally!)
  • Better performance and stability with the JavaScript engine, TraceMonkey
  • Location Aware Browsing
  • Support for native JSON and web worker threads
  • Improvements to the Gecko engine
  • Support for HTML5 codes (<video> and <audio), new CSS properties, JavaScript query selectors, and SVG transforms

Installing this release will overwrite your existing Firefox installation. However, you will not lose bookmarks or history. Like I said before, some add-ons will not work.

You can find the rest of the Release Notes at Mozilla.com.

Have you tested this release? Leave a comment and let us know how it is!

Welcome to my Blog!

Welcome to NixusTech! This is my home to talk about, rant about, and review software or anything about technology or something I am interested in. I also will post desktop screenshots because I customize whatever OS (Operating System) I am using. I tend to switch between Windows and Ubuntu Linux. If you want me to discuss a certain topic, feel free to let me know.
